Forging Steele

Steele Kelly has been an active leader in Arkansas since 2010. While much of his work has centered around violence prevention and Resilience, his grassroots organizing has also led him to be considered an expert in various closely related fields.

After High School, Steele went on to attend New Mexico’s Military Institute in Roswell. Later, he received an Associate of Arts from New Mexico Military Institute. Finally, Steele continued his educational pursuits and moved to Alabama to attend Auburn University. He received his Bachelor of Arts in English from Auburn University in 2009. Steele now holds a graduate degree from Colorado State University in Healthcare Administration.

Steele previously served as Chairman of the Board for Suicide Prevention Allies, a non-profit organization based out of Hot Springs, AR. During his tenure as Chair, Steele was integral in bringing about the vision of crisis intervention efforts to a more diverse population, including Security Forces for Air Force professionals. In addition, his time as the Army National Guard’s Resilience Coordinator gave him a unique perspective and approach to empowering military professionals with skills that had previously been focused in first responding and law enforcement.

Steele served as the youngest member of the Arkansas Suicide Prevention Council and was a leading voice in advocating for first responding professionals, service members, and veterans. Steele is an experienced Urban Firefighter and EMT who has dutifully served his local community and state. His dedication to these populations ensured they were included in all state-level initiatives and suicide prevention-related efforts.

For five years, Steele served as the Suicide Prevention Program Manager for Accenture Federal Services in Little Rock, AR. In 2019, he shifted to the Arkansas Department of Health and acted as their Volunteer Program Manager. Under his guidance, he would champion the creation of a Mental Health Reserve Corps, the first in the state. His successful leadership of this program led to a promotion to become Lead Preparedness Planner. During this time, Steele would play an instrumental role in navigating the COVID19 preparedness response plan for the Arkansas Department of Health.

Soon after, Steele would become the Violence Prevention Integrator for Joint Base Lewis-McChord, where he would manage all aspects of the complex and robust primary prevention approach to violence prevention for the installation.

Steele continues his community service and violence prevention efforts to increase Resilience and prevent suicide through trainings and consulting across the region. Steele is highly regarded and is a leading subject matter expert in an array of violence prevention, Resilience, and community organizing fields. His leadership, expertise, and insight have led to successful outcomes in various programs.
